The actual requirements

Three things are genuinely needed and none of them is technical. The list of assumed requirements is much longer and almost entirely wrong.

What you genuinely need

Something to be specific about. One subject you know enough about to say something useful on repeatedly. Not expertise - enough to be ahead of the person you are talking to.

Willingness to write to strangers. The method ends in conversations, and someone unwilling to have them has removed the step where it pays.

The ability to keep going without feedback. The hardest of the three and the only one that cannot be acquired in an afternoon.

What people think they need and do not

• Technical skill. A phone and one account with a free tier.
• Video presence. Several formats involve no face at all.
• Writing ability. Clear beats good, and clear is a low bar.
• An existing audience. Reach comes from non-followers.
• Money to invest. Beyond the training, close to nothing at the start.
• Prior experience. Most people in any intake have none.

What is genuinely hard about it

Nothing, individually. Every task in this work is within anyone's ability on any given day, which is what makes the failure rate confusing to people looking at it from outside.

The difficulty is entirely in repetition without feedback, and no skill list captures that because it is not a skill. It is a tolerance.

The one that is worth developing deliberately

Being specific. Most content fails by being generally true and useful to nobody, and the repair is almost always the same: name the situation, name the constraint, name what you would actually do.

That is a habit rather than a talent, and it improves faster than anything else on this page with deliberate attention.

What the hours teach that no course can

Which parts of your subject people actually ask about. That information does not exist anywhere until you have published and had replies, and it reshapes everything downstream.

It is also the main argument for publishing early and badly rather than preparing thoroughly - the preparation is answering questions you have not heard yet.

What improves fastest with practice

Speed. The first piece takes hours and the twentieth takes twenty minutes, and almost all of that gain arrives in the first month.

Which means the weekly hour figure is at its worst right at the start, when motivation is also being tested. Anyone judging the sustainability of the commitment in week two is judging the most expensive version of it.

The honest assessment

The skill barrier here is low and the persistence barrier is high. Most people who do not succeed at this could have done the work; they stopped before the work did anything, which is a different problem with a different solution.
