Around a full-time job

This is how most people who succeed at it actually start, and the constraint is not total hours. It is whether the hours are protected or borrowed.

The two patterns that work

Two fixed evenings. Same days each week, treated as appointments rather than intentions. Ninety minutes each, one for making and one for replying.

One weekend block plus short weekday check-ins. Two hours on a Saturday to produce, then fifteen minutes on two or three weekdays to answer messages.

Both work because production and conversation have different rhythms - one can be batched, the other cannot wait a week.

The pattern that collapses

"Whenever I get time." It is the default and it fails inside a month, because the time never appears in a week that has other demands in it.

The distinction is not discipline. It is whether the slot was decided in advance or renegotiated every week against whatever else arose, and the second contest is one this work always loses.

What can genuinely be batched

Making things. An afternoon can produce a fortnight of short content if the subject is settled, and doing that removes the daily decision entirely.

What cannot be batched is replying. Conversations go cold, and a message answered four days later has usually lost the person - which is why the short weekday check-ins matter more than their length suggests.

The realistic expectation with a job

Slower than someone doing it full time, and not by as much as you would think, because the constraint is elapsed weeks rather than hours applied. Someone at three hours a week for six months is ahead of someone who did twenty hours a week for one month and stopped.

Protecting the slot when work runs over

Move it rather than skip it. A slot shifted to another evening in the same week survives; a slot cancelled becomes optional, and optional slots stop existing within a month.

That single habit - never cancel, only reschedule inside the week - accounts for a disproportionate share of who is still going in month four.

The trap specific to employed people

Waiting for a quieter period at work. It does not arrive, and the version of this that works starts during an ordinary busy month rather than an imagined calm one.

If two hours a week genuinely cannot be found in a normal week, that is a real answer and worth accepting rather than deferring.
