What to have in place before day one
You need protected time in your week, a willingness to appear publicly, and a decision about what you will talk about - and none of those can be bought with the course.
What the method genuinely does not require
This is the shortest list in affiliate marketing, and it is the honest appeal of the approach.
- No email list. Conversations happen in DMs.
- No product of your own. You recommend someone else's.
- No advertising budget. Distribution is organic.
- No existing following. Short-form reach is not gated on follower count the way older formats were.
- No technical skill. No site to build, no funnel to wire.
What it actually requires
Three things, and all three are decisions rather than purchases.
- Protected time, repeating weekly. Not found time - scheduled time, defended against the things that will compete with it. Two production sessions and a daily check-in is the realistic minimum shape.
- A tolerance for being visible. Not confidence, not polish - tolerance. The method involves publishing where people can see you and answering people who reply.
- A subject you can sustain. Something you can talk about weekly for a year without dreading it. Picking one you can sustain covers how to choose.
The equipment question
A phone is sufficient to start, and upgrading before you have published anything is the most common way to spend money instead of doing the work.
Short-form content is judged on whether it is worth watching rather than on production quality, and the gap between phone footage and studio footage matters far less than the gap between publishing and not publishing. Buy equipment when a specific limitation is actually costing you something.
What to decide before you start rather than during
- Your weekly shape. Which days you produce, when you check conversations. Decided in advance, this survives a busy week; decided ad hoc, it does not.
- Your subject. Narrow enough to be recognisable, broad enough to sustain a year of content.
- Your evaluation date. A fixed point at which you assess, so that every individual quiet week is not a referendum on continuing.
The one thing worth setting up early
Somewhere to collect the people who engage, beyond the platform. The method works through DMs, and DMs live on a platform you do not control.
That is not a criticism of the method - it is a general truth about renting distribution. Anyone building on someone else's platform is one policy change from starting over, and the cheap insurance is capturing contact you own as you go.
The honest prerequisite nobody lists
Having decided you will keep going through a quiet stretch. Organic distribution builds rather than arrives, and the weeks between starting and seeing anything are where this method is abandoned.
Deciding that in advance - as a commitment with a date rather than a feeling - is the single highest-value preparation available, and it costs nothing.
What to prepare in the week before you start
- Write down twenty things you could talk about in your chosen subject. If you cannot reach twenty, the subject is too narrow or not yours.
- Block the production sessions in a calendar, as appointments rather than intentions.
- Decide your daily check-in times. Two short ones beat one long one.
- Set the evaluation date and write it somewhere you will see it.
An hour of that removes most of the decisions that otherwise get made badly under time pressure in week three.
Choosing the subject, concretely
Pick something you have already done rather than something you would like to learn, because the content has to keep coming and researched enthusiasm runs out faster than experience does.
It does not need to be impressive. Anything you understand better than most people is enough, and "most people" is a much lower bar than it feels from inside. The test is whether you could answer twenty questions about it without looking anything up.
Where the tooling cost actually sits
An automation platform is the one genuine running cost of this method, and it scales with how many conversations you are handling rather than with how much content you publish.
That means it starts near nothing and grows only when the method is already working, which is the right shape for a cost to have. It is worth understanding before you start so the first invoice is expected rather than a surprise - and worth noting that a course bundling the tooling changes that arithmetic materially.
The mistake that costs the most before starting
Preparing instead of publishing. Research, tooling, planning and setup all feel like progress and produce nothing that anyone can see.
The first piece of content will not be good, and publishing it is worth more than a month of preparation that would have made it slightly better. The method only starts working once things exist publicly, and everything before that point is cost.
